GENERATOR REPAIR

This procedure is for rebuilding and basic testing of a 1949 Ford 6V Generator.

Generator backing plate. Clean, remove old brushes and get ready to pull bearing.

Remove end plate bearing with a small pipe, cap on end and a large socket or pipe in between as a slide for the puller. See starter motor section on this web site for more info.

Press in new bronze bearing. Use wd40 to reduce friction on press fit.

Examine commutator, clean with electrical cleaner and rag, do not use emory cloth. Mica (pieces between copper plates) should be below the copper plates, unlike the starter motor. If not look at starter motor rebuild section for commutator lathe.

Remove front nut and washer from pulley and remove the pulley and bearing housing. If difficult to remove use 3 jaw puller.
